Scope and Contents: This collection contains the work of musicologist, Kurt Stone.Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1911, Stone studied at the Royal Danish Conservatory in Copenhagen. He moved to New York in 1938 where he pursued work as music editor and scholar. There he worked for several music publishers including G. Schirmer and Alexander Broude. He was a long-time editor with Associated Music Publishers.
Stone also wrote on contemporary music, edited ''The Writings of Elliott Carter,'' and, with his wife, Else, translated from the German the ''Handbook of Percussion Instruments'' by Karl Peinkofer and Fritz Tannigel. Mr. Stone's ''Music Notation in the 20th Century: A Practical Guidebook'' was published in 1980.This collection includes scores edited by Stone as well as personal and professional correspondence. Stone died at his home in Wilmington in 1989.
