Abstract
This collection contains the personal papers of Thomas T. Hamilton, first President of Wilmington College and long time Principal of New Hanover High School. With inclusive dates of 1948-1989, the collection includes Hamilton's curriculum vitae, newspaper articles, photographs, a letter and a typed document. These papers focus on Hamilton's career change in 1949 and his involvement with Wilmington College.
Administrative/Biographical History
Thomas Tristam Hamilton was born in Dillon, South Carolina in 1900. He was educated in the public school systems of South Carolina and North Carolina. Hamilton attended Wake Forest College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1929. He worked as a teacher and principal in several high schools in North Carolina before coming to Wilmington. Hamilton served as the Principal of New Hanover High School from 1935 to 1949 and was also appointed Assistant Superintendent in charge of Secondary Education in New Hanover County. He was instrumental in the establishment of Wilmington College and served as its first President from 1947-1949. In 1949, Hamilton was appointed Director of secondary education of the Viriginia State Department of Education. When he retired in 1965, he was director of publication and teaching materials for the Virginia public school system.
Hamilton was married to Roberta C. Hamilton and the couple had one son, John C. Hamilton. He died in 1989.
