Title:
Interview with Charles Calhoun, October 30, 2002
Date:
October 30, 2002
Description:
In the first part of Captain Calhoun's interview, he discusses his early Navy career including his time at the Naval Academy in Annapolis in the mid 1930's and his early destroyer service just past Pear Harbor, as well as time in North Great Britain at Skaflow. The second two hours are for his extensive time aboard the destroyer USS Sterett, including while it was being constructed and then served in the South Pacific. There is a major segment on the important Naval battle when his ship in the American Fleet fought the Japanese fleet coming down the "slot". The final two hours are about his time on a different destroyer where he was first officer preparing for the invasion of the Philippines and his ship was nearly destroyed in a typhoon (several ships were sunk and hundreds of sailors lost).
