Description:
A native of New Jersey, Derwent Cartwell visited Wilmington for the reunion of those serving on the USS Booth. In December 1942, he enlisted in the navy and trained for diesel engineering. The Booth was used as a convoy, transporting troops and munitions from New York and Virginia to North Africa. Onboard, he was in charge of the main diesel engine. When the Germans surrendered, Cartwell was serving on the Olson, which then sailed to the Pacific for picket duty.
