Date:
September 24, 2001
Description:
"Born and raised on the Cape Fear River," Milton Domler joined the Navy and traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, for boot camp. During World War II, he first served on a destroyer tender in the north Atlantic, supplying food, fuel, and medical aid to the Free French, Free Polish, Norwegians, and British. Domler suffered an accident while checking battery levels on the ship and inhaled acid fumes. This led to a year of recovery in the pulmonary ward of St. Alban's Naval Hospital in New York.
