Interview with Clifton Fero, April 23, 2003
Date:
April 23, 2003
Description:
Clifton Fero was drafted into service in Lansing, Michigan at the beginning of 1944. He had been deferred for a number of years due to his job as a die repairman in a drop forge. He and his coworkers made important parts and equipment for the armed services. Fero completed his Navy boot camp at Camp Perry, Virginia and then served on the USS Booth as the captain's talker. He relayed messages to different parts of the ship via telephones for the captain. While in the Pacific he recalls visiting a small island in the Pacific where the indigenous people had never seen Caucasians before. He also recounts his experiences aboard ship during a typhoon with 70 foot seas not long after The Bomb was dropped.
