Title:
Interview with Walter Joseph Harrelson, undated
Description:
Walter J. Harrelson was at Mars Hill College up in Western North Carolina, studying to be a minister when the bombing at Pearl Harbor occurred. He had been previously deferred as a candidate for ministry, but enlisted instead. Completed his boot camp training at the Naval Station in Norfolk and was assigned to a submarine repair unit. Most importantly he describes how proud he was of his shipmates lack or joy about the bomb at Hiroshima. He was proud to be surrounded with men and women who were unwilling to take pleasure in the suffering of their fellow human being. Discharged shortly after to return home to care for his wife and child. He then completed his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Quickly attained his PhD and taught.
